With spring arriving, the McLean Science National Honors Society (SNHS) is working on creating new, exciting goals for the remainder of the school year. One of the projects the SNHS has been working on is the implementation of a new outreach initiative at Spring Hill Elementary School.
“We take volunteers and hands-on STEM activities to Spring Hill students to spread a love for STEM in youth,” said senior Daniel Campos-Morales, SNHS co-president. “Through this, we aim to provide enriching community service and science related opportunities for both our members and the surrounding McLean community.”
Every week, students from SNHS engage in several fun activities and lead fascinating experiments with Spring Hill students.
“Each time, we send a team of about seven high school students to run a STEM science club at Spring Hill for about 15 kids,” said Erin Kreeger, physics teacher and SNHS advisor. “Our SNHS students always have a mini hands-on lesson, whether it's chemistry, physics or engineering.”
The outreach program at Spring Hill is SNHS’ most successful project this year due to its consistency and significant community impact.
“This program has a big effect on the elementary students as it exposes them to topics they don’t usually see in school,” Kreeger said. “We hope that through this program, the students spark a passion for STEM and do something great with it in the future.”
