With the end of the school year rapidly approaching, McLean’s Science National Honors Society (SNHS) met to reflect on this year’s accomplishments.
SNHS has implemented several new projects this year to improve the school community. An example is an SNHS outreach program, which provides students at Spring Hill Elementary School with opportunities to engage in STEM activities.
“Through the Outreach Program, we created the STEM club at Spring Hill to teach students about Science and Engineering.” junior Julie Daniel said. “Throughout this year, we engaged the students in several activities, such as building bridges and chemistry experiments”
SNHS also provided science teachers with school supplies and student resources.
“This project benefitted lots of science teachers at McLean as they were able to have access to supplies such as markers and whiteboards” said Erin Kreeger, physics teacher and SNHS advisor. “Members of SNHS also created study resources for different science classes that were provided to teachers for students to use.”
The last project SNHS undertook this year was the Get2Green initiative. Get2Green is FCPS program that partners with schools around Fairfax County to promote environmentally friendly atmospheres.
“Through this project, [SNHS] gets many little challenges, [such as] researching the school’s environmental impact or doing studies on the school’s recycling patterns,” Kreeger said.
SNHS hopes to continue to build up on these programs next year.
“Next year, we hope to reach out to more schools for our outreach program and strengthen our ties with the Get2Green initiative,” Daniels said. “We plan to use what we learned this year to make an even bigger impact next year.”
