International Club hosted its second mandatory meeting last Thursday for McLean’s upcoming International Night in February. To prepare for the event, club members and volunteers gathered to create flyers and posters.
“We advertise with posters around the school and post on Instagram,” said senior Sophia Dannenberg, vice president of International Club. “The main way we get students to perform is by [advertising] and reaching out to specific cultural clubs.”
Students incorporated symbols representing multiculturalism into their posters with depictions of diverse students, a globe and various flags. Along with this, details about the event such as different live performances and food contributions from volunteers were also included.
“Posters are really just a great way to advertise and give people a good background of what the event is about and where to sign up,” Dannenberg said.
The meeting also discussed different sign-up dates and volunteer opportunities that people can participate in to contribute to International Night.
“I think it’s great how there is flexibility in what you can contribute for International Night,” junior Chris Rhee said. “You can bring in your uniqueness through performing, bringing in food or just using your skills to create advertisements.”
International Club has successfully created opportunities for all students to contribute to the night – there is always a space for every person to bring in their cultural values and heritage to the McLean community.
“We hope that International Night spreads a message of support and appreciation for all students from different backgrounds,” Dannenberg said. “It’s a great way for students to learn about other cultural traditions and promotes an inclusive environment at McLean.”
