The Girls Leadership Committee (GLC) has started a new program by inviting guest speakers to speak to its members. On Jan. 17, the club invited Susan Shobeiri, a McLean alumni and former co-president of GLC.
“[Shobeiri] talked about her life before and during college,” sophomore Divya Isukapalli said.
During Highlander Flex, Shobeiri talked at Student Services about her extracurriculars, academic life and social life at McLean. She also spoke about her college life at Boston University, where despite not knowing what she wanted to major in college at first, she eventually found her passion for protecting the environment.
“Hearing about all the career paths and the fact that you don’t have to know what you want to do was very reassuring,” said senior Natalie Pillai, co-president of the GLC.
Even as Shobeiri was briefly interrupted by a fire alarm, she provided various useful insights about college and high school life. She also shared her experiences when applying to jobs and working at internships where she can continue to explore her fondness for protecting the environment.
“I think [the discussion] helped many of the girls feel more confident going into college,” Pillai said.
GLC will continue to expand its guest speaker series, where they soon plan to invite a nonprofit that aims to help people with eating disorders. As their first guest speaker, Shobeiri expanded girls' horizons as they find their passions.
“[Shobeiri] is a very ambitious and dynamic person,” Isukapalli said. “She inspired me to try more [activities] in high school and taught me that it’s never too late to start something [new].”
