Today is the Day: Temple of the Morning Star is oddly pleasing and fright-inducing

Temple of the Morning Star is the 1997 album by Tennessee band Today is the Day. Since then, they have come out with more material, but Temple of the Morning Star is their most exceptional production.

The first track, “Temple of the Morning Star (Acoustic),” exercises a thrumping guitar rhythm with multi-layered nasally vocals hidden behind a tinge of distortion effect. Though this track may lend to the assumption of a seemingly calm, other-worldly album, it is a representation of the laid-back side of Today is the Day; as the album continues, the acoustic version of Temple of the Morning Star compares to the other tracks like the Foo Fighters compare to Jay-Z.

One of the most unique tracks on the album is “Pinnacle,” the eighth track on the album. It begins with a rhythmic combination of trebly bass and drums to then be accompanied by startling and rightfully terrifying super-distorted vocals that resemble the demonic hissings one would hear from a horror film. Yes, it is very odd, but it never fails to entertain.

Today is the Day’s Temple of the Morning Star is a creation of modern awe and truly is an eye-opening listen for those who are looking for something dreadfully different and entertaining. I give Temple of the Morning Star 3 out of 5 stars, and still do recommend it highly for a musically exotic experience.
