Imagine a perfect world: a place where thoughts are expressed freely, interests are pursued, friendly people are all around, TV shows and bands are constantly in the spotlight, and there is even motivation to become a healthier you. In an imperfect world, Tumblr encompasses many aspects of the life we all desire.
Recently, it has been argued that Tumblr is damaging to users’ self-esteem due to the glorification of thinness, exemplified by the thigh gap. Many teens are now obsessing over whether their thighs touch or not. However, despite the teens’ beliefs, from a medical standpoint, the thigh gap is not based on thinness, but on the width of one’s pelvis. Due to this misconception, teens are needlessly starving themselves to reach an unattainable goal.
However, as stated in the Terms and Conditions, the Tumblr staff “reserves the right to suspend accounts or remove content” from blogs that do not follow the guidelines, meaning, but not limited to, blogs that are pro-anorexia. Therefore, blogs that support this mental illness will typically be shut down.
Although there are blogs that advocate this serious condition, there are even more blogs surrounding recovery, ‘fitspiration’, and good health. Blogs that fall into this category often include posts such as healthy recipes, workouts, powerful quotes, and general encouragement.
“Whenever I am upset about something, I make a text post and then I’ll get tons of messages saying ‘it will get better!’ or ‘message me and we’ll talk!’,” junior Emma Haldane said.
Not only do bloggers inspire one another through motivational posts, but they may converse one-on-one or even anonymously. This connection with another person, anonymously or not, eliminates the fear of being judged by your peers and you know that it is unlikely that you encounter users outside of the internet.
Overall, Tumblr’s helpful and strengthening community far outshines the shadow of inappropriate blogs. It provides motivation, community, and an outlet for what you think, love, witness, and believe.
