CheMnection connects students
With the demands and challenges of the Chemistry curriculum in MHS, it’s no surprise that a new club has come to fruition: CheMnection, a service club in the school that provides help and tutoring to sophomores taking Chemistry.
CheMnection, which tutors both honors and nonhonors students, began with the efforts of guidance counselor Deborah You.The club is also very integrated, in terms of being student-run. Ms. You had the help of two students with the start-up and management of the tutoring service.
“Two of the co-founders… have been incredibly instrumental on the success of this club: Susie Choi and Tina Chai,” said You.
“When I visited Ms. You’s office during course registration last year, she mentioned that a handful of sophomores were not performing so well in Chemistry. She mentioned the possibility of starting a tutoring club,” stated junior Susie Choi. “At first, I thought Ms. You was just being nice, but… here we are!”
Choi, along with Chai, prepared the paperwork for the club in the fall and received approval for CheMnection in January of this year. So far, the club has received widespread support from frequenters of the tutoring service.
“If I didn’t understand one step, or I didn’t feel like I was going the right direction, [the tutors] helped me out and showed me how to do it,” stated Beth Pottanat, a sophomore who has visited the club. They’re juniors, so they understand the struggles of chemistry!” she added.
The club has run smoothly so far, when it comes to any complications they have encountered.
“The only real challenge was getting the club approved,” said Choi. “Regardless, it totally pays off!”
CheMnection meets every week on either Monday or Thursday at 2:15pm. Blue flyers (pictured above) detailing specific dates and times for meetings can be found in every science classroom.
