There I was, sitting on my comfortable couch at home, peacefully watching my TV shows the day after Halloween, when suddenly, those annoying commercials interrupted my entertainment. But what made those advertisements even more annoying was the fact that they were already promoting Christmas sales.
What about a break for just a minute? I swear these companies only care about making money and as soon as they can they jump at the occasion! And on top of that, it seems as if they are all just forgetting about Thanksgiving. Why aren’t there any commercials with turkeys and fall leaves? We’re just going from witches and ghosts to Santa Claus and snowmen.
And the thing that got me the most was seeing a New Years commercial. Yup, a New Years sale going on at car dealerships right now. So these people just decided to not only skip Thanksgiving, but also Christmas.
What’s the point? Well, some people might say that it’s a good thing to have Christmas sales going on already so that you’re not caught up on the week before Christmas doing all your gift shopping. Bah Humbug! I know plenty of people who, regardless of sales, wait until Christmas Eve to start and finish their Christmas shopping.
Some people might say that having all these Christmas commercials and sales is nice because they make the Christmas season last longer. Bah Humbug! The Christmas season is nice because it doesn’t last long; the fact that it’s short is why we love it so much. We enjoy it even more because we try to make the most of this short season. Plus, Christmas isn’t about the gifts and the sales, it’s about being around the people you love.
And finally, some people might say that Thanksgiving doesn’t even matter. Bah Humbug! That’s the most incipient response I have heard. Sure, why not skip the only day where most people finally give thanks for all the stuff they have? It’s not like people give thanks everyday like they should so why forget about Thanksgiving? Plus, you get to eat a delicious turkey that you hardly ever get to eat any other day of the year. Skipping Thanksgiving because it doesn’t matter! Hah! Let’s skip Christmas because it doesn’t matter!
We are caught in the season where you have the lazy people, such as myself, who still have to take down their Halloween decorations, and then you’ve got the impatient people who already have their Christmas lights up (trust me, I’ve seen it). This is in no way the time to be putting up Christmas Trees.
Over all, I think that starting the Christmas season the day after Halloween is too rash. There is no way that we can seize the moment when we’re rushed through it. I’d say that two weeks before Thanksgiving could be the time for Thanksgiving sales and from Thanksgiving to Christmas can be the time for Christmas sales.
Let’s enjoy the Christmas season like we used to, not rush through it and thinking that it revolves around shopping and sales.
