The recent weather swings across the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area have caused many challenges for the McLean student body. One day, it is either clear, sunny skies with high humidity and temperatures. Next, the atmosphere is cold and gloomy with clouds and pouring rain or thunderstorms.
“It’s honestly exhausting because one day it feels like summer and the next it feels freezing again,” sophomore Inhee Do said. “You never really know how to prepare for activities.”
This bipolar weather has caused unexpected challenges for students here at McLean. Weather forecasts have predicted days of severe rainstorms and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from a frigid 50 degrees in the morning to nearly 100 degrees by the afternoon. The National Weather Service also issued warnings of potential flooding and severe weather conditions in McLean throughout the week.
“I was so backed up in the morning because everybody was moving so slowly due to the rain,” sophomore Brady Chua said. “I almost got to my first period class late”.
Students are not at all pleased with the weather in their lives. In just under a week, numerous activities had to be canceled or relocated, including sports such as soccer, track and tennis, due to thunderstorms and the warnings that followed.
“A lot of our recent practices and games were jeopardized by the severe weather,” said freshman Sajan Chandela, a Varsity Tennis player on the McLean team.
The gloomy weather has also affected students’ stress and their energy levels. At this point of the year, when the SOL tests, final exams and AP tests are being taken, the weather didn’t help in any way. While the weather has not been destructive in the McLean area, it has surely left an impact on the school life over the past few weeks.
