On November 4, 2013 the McLean girls volleyball team took to the court against Yorktown High School for the first round of the district tournament. In a game where a loss would signal the end of their season, tensions were at an all time high, however seeded considerably lower than their opponent, it was not to be the best of nights for the lady highlanders.
In the opening game, Yorktown came out of the gates quick taking a significantly early lead. However, McLean fought back hard scoring seven unanswered points before eventually losing the game 25-23; Yorktown 1-0.
The first game very much set the tempo for the rest of the match. With confidence seemingly sparse in the lady highlander’s play, Yorktown inevitably capitalized, taking a 17-5 lead relatively early on. However, senior captain Kara Hannibal responded to this by acing the lady patriots twice in a row, and saw the deficit cut to only six points. However a resurgence failed to form for the girls, and unforced errors plagued their comeback attempts as they fell 25-14 to end the second game; Yorktown 2-0.
The team returned to the bench knowing that a loss in the next game would end their season. A motivated pep talk from head coach Bill Musgrove rejuvenated the hopes of a potential comeback as the lady highlanders took an unexpected 17-9 lead. However, eight unanswered points from the lady patriots to tie the game sent the Yorktown fan base into an uncontrollable frenzy, with another five unanswered points casting a dark shadow of doubt on the future of the lady highlander’s season. All speculation was then confirmed as Yorktown senior Jane Townshend’s shot effectively ended the McLean season; Yorktown 3-0.
