The McLean Jingle Bell 5K is an annual event that brings the community together for a merry run/walk supported by the McLean Rotary Club. It is a festive activity where participants are encouraged to wear holiday attire as they pass through McLean’s neighborhoods.
“I think it’s the fitness aspect and the camaraderie,” Janine Frank said, who is the head of the 5k event. “Last year, a lot of the homes got involved, they would have music playing along [the route], and made it really fun.”
This annual event occurs in early December. It starts promptly at 8:30 am at McLean High School. Runners of all ages are welcome to participate in this event. In the beginning of the race, participants receive jingle bells to attach to their shoes to make the run more festive, a tradition that has been going on for three years.
“I saw races in Baltimore,” Frank said. “It’s just cool running and hearing the bells. It’s something fun, cheerful, and festive.”
The Jingle Bell 5K started back on December 9th, 2023. The event was an initiative by McLean Rotary Club with two goals in mind, strengthening community bonds and raising funds for local, national, and international charities.
“Whether we make a dollar or we made $10,000 at the end of the day we’re making a difference,” Frank said. “And we’re getting exposure for Rotary.”
Overall, the McLean Rotary Club has raised around $20,000 from the Jingle Bell 5K in total the past three years.
“Every year has been anywhere from $5,000 to $7,000 or $7,000 to $8,000,” Frank said.
At the end of the race, awards are given to overall male and female finishers. There are also post-race activities such as gatherings with foods, drinks, and local vendors.
“Everyone gets a medal when they’ve completed it,” Frank said. “Then the top male and female [finishers] will get $100 gift cards to Potomac River Running.”
With each year the race continues to grow, inspiring more people to get involved and support local causes.
“I would love for this to be a huge money maker for the club to be able to contribute a decent amount of money again to the organizations and charities we support,” Frank said.
For organizers, the race represents a shared effort that goes beyond the finish line.
“We’re doing something amazing for the community,” Frank said. “And I hope people want to be part of that.”
