There is no doubt that Trader Joe’s is a popular go-to for snacks, convenient meals and fresh, locally-sourced produce. However, it’s also no secret that Trader Joe’s annually releases a highly anticipated variety of seasonal items, with popular fall-themed items including pumpkin spices and all things cozy. In addition to our review on pumpkin-centered treats earlier this week, here’s a second look into this year’s new products, both savory and sweet.
Salted Maple Cold Foam Creamer – 4.5/5
It’s safe to say that this cold foam lived up to my expectations. I put mine over some cold brew and ice, and was pleasantly surprised that it had a subtle saltiness that didn’t overpower the coffee. The maple flavor came through in each sip and balanced out the bitterness of the cold brew. My only critique is that the cold foam was rather bubbly, instead of creamy, but with the pros outweighing the cons I think I’ve found my daily coffee for this season.
Pumpkin Butter – 2/5
I was skeptical of this product from this start as I suspected it would taste too much like pumpkin puree — unfortunately, I was right. Before putting the spread on toast, I ate a spoonful by itself. I appreciated the fall spices, including cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg, but I was unable to get over the consistency. Still, I decided to give it another shot by mixing it with cream cheese on toast, as suggested on the back of the jar. This was an improvement from the spoonful I had tried previously, but I still didn’t love it. I liked how the sweetness of the butter contrasted with the savory cream cheese but I do not plan on eating this again. While Trader Joes’ pumpkin butter offers the comfort of fall spices, I do not recommend purchasing it as its texture was a major letdown.
Harvest Vegetable Hash Egg Bites – 1/5
I’ll be completely straight when I say that I strongly dislike this item for both its texture and flavor. This no-prep breakfast option consists of an egg white base, cottage cheese, sweet potato, butternut squash and other fall herbs. I mean it when I say that the only thing I could taste when I bit into these was rosemary. To make things worse, it was hard to cut into the egg as the cottage cheese and egg whites (a protein overload) made for a super tough, rubbery outer layer. This was despite the fact that I heated them using the lowest setting on my airfryer, in an attempt to heat them all the way through without overcooking them. While the egg bites offer a good protein boost, the nutrition cannot compensate for the taste. In summary, I will not eat these again.
Teeny Tiny Apple Pies – 5/5
These were the highlight of all the things I tried. They featured a thin pie crust, tangy and sweet apple filling and buttery cinnamon streusel on top. I heated these in an air fryer as well, which merged all of the components of the dessert together in the best way possible. I liked the single serving size as it didn’t feel too heavy, and the balance of sugar to cinnamon was just right. These pies would probably be even better with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, but for the fall season, they are a wonderful dessert option.
