Known for selling in bulk, Costco has been a go-to store for those who want cheap and affordable goods. The store has attracted immense popularity, and in recent years, they have also been trying to do the same with their food court. After years of listing the Fruit Smoothie, Cold Brew Mocha Freeze, Vanilla Icecream and Strawberry/Chocolate Syrup Ice Cream Sundae, Costco has finally decided to diversify its drink menu.
In addition to their original sundaes, the warehouse-style store decided to add a Vanilla and Chocolate Caramel Brownie Sundae to their food court menu.
Vanilla Caramel Brownie Sundae – 2/5
Upon first tasting a spoonful of the Vanilla Caramel Brownie Sundae, we were immediately underwhelmed by the lack of flavor of the ice cream. Instead of carrying a vanilla taste, it had a flavor that could best be described as milky. Overall, the ice cream was very bland. To make up for this, drizzled caramel and brownie bites were on the top of the sundae and at the very bottom of the cup. While these toppings made the ice cream slightly more bearable, they still did not make it particularly enjoyable. The caramel was extremely sweet, but it did improve the overall flavor of the sundae. The brownie bites added some needed texture, but seemed underbaked. The flavor was dull, and the toppings were unoriginal. Although the sweet treat was only $2.99, we would not consider buying it again.
Chocolate Caramel Brownie Sundae – 3.5/5
The chocolate ice cream in the Chocolate Caramel Brownie Sundae was a massive improvement from its vanilla flavored counterpart. While the chocolate ice cream was not anything special, it provided a classic flavor that served as a good base for the rest of the sundae. The drizzled caramel was still too sweet, and the brownie bites were still too underbaked, but this option was definitely the better of the choices. The ice cream flavor fits nicely with the rich caramel, and the brownies added to the chocolate theme. However, the bites had a strange, underlying smoky flavor. Additionally, since the toppings were only at the top and the bottom of the sundae, we had to dig to the base of the cup to break up the pure chocolate flavor. Both of the sundaes were extremely filling, and would likely be difficult to eat alone.
These new menu items are fun to try for the first time, but should not be part of your usual order. Especially if you want something quick and refreshing, the new sundaes might be a pass—don’t let the caramel drizzle and brownie sprinkles fool you. The heavy serving and taste of the ice cream hasn’t changed from their old sundaes and the additional caramel and brownie flavors are only accents at best. If you really need a refresher, go for the fruit smoothie or the original ice cream sundaes—the caramel and brownie on top aren’t worth an extra half a dollar.
