Placed on the corner of Maple Avenue is a cafe covered in pink florals and cushioned velvet seats. Lily’s Chocolate and Coffee offers richly-flavored treats and an enchanting atmosphere that enhances the captivating taste of each item.
When I entered, I was immediately welcomed by a patient staff member. After a careful look at the menu, I selected the ruby lockma, butter croissant and chocolate covered strawberries. The staff quickly began to prepare my spread.
After around a five minute wait, my food was brought out and I was able to enjoy it at one of the many marble covered tables with a pink velvet seat.
I first tried the butter croissant. This dish was $3.75, and though that may seem expensive for such a basic pastry, the croissant was truly incredible. Within the first bite, I felt an outer crunch that led to a soft and light interior, accompanied by just the right amount of buttery flavor. The croissant didn’t have the undesirable flakiness that comes with the crunch, and left my cravings satisfied.
I continued with the $10.95 cup of chocolate covered strawberries, and unfortunately I was not met with the same amazement. After paying a hefty price, I was expecting fresh strawberries drizzled with a warm milk chocolate in a fondue-like texture. Instead, I was met with a cup of frozen strawberries and chocolate, which was so firm I had trouble even taking a bite. Once the cup thawed, I was able to enjoy the treat more, and the chocolate and strawberries did offer a sweet but refreshing flavor, which was quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, the beginning freeze took away from my experience, and left me feeling disappointed in my pick.
Following the tragic frozen strawberries, I tried what the cafe is truly known for: their lokma. Lokma is a fried dough dessert that originated in ancient Greece and is now often enjoyed in the Middle East—mine was covered with a ruby sauce.
I paid $10.95 for five pieces of Lokma, so I was hoping it’d be worth the high price. Once I opened the box, I immediately noticed the pink ruby covering the fried dough with strawberry pieces sprinkled on top. After my first bite, I’d easily say that this made up for the other strawberry fiasco. This treat was perfectly sweet and the ruby sauce added a fresh sugary tang. This was easily the best dessert I tried from the cafe, and effortlessly made my visit at Lily’s a success.
Lily’s is a quaint and well kept cafe that has proven itself to be a must-visit spot, serving a variety of well curated and made sweet pastries and drinks. Though the prices are a little high, Lily’s is a great place to splurge on a delicious delicacy.
