In just a short time, Flavor Hive has become a viral sensation, beloved by many for its quirky concept of “Bring Your Own Bag.” Customers originally purchased from its food truck, where they could hand over a bag of chips of their choice and have it filled with a mix of proteins, veggies and signature sauces. Then, on July 24, the popular food truck officially opened its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in Annandale, attracting massive customer turnout.
The upgrade from food truck to store was impressive—the restaurant itself is spotless, with an option to dine outdoors as well. When I visited, an artist was in the process of painting a colorful mural on the wall, showing their effort to make this place more welcoming for customers.
Ordering at Flavor Hive feels familiar, with a similar experience to that of Chipotle. Customers start by selecting a base—rice, salad, fries, walking taco or a bag of chips— before choosing a protein: chicken, beef, or falafel (with the option of extra meat). I ordered two regular bowls: a rice base with chicken and another with beef, both topped with their house sauces.
A variety of toppings and sauces are also available. One of Flavor Hive’s biggest highlights is its trio of signature sauces. The white sauce has a yogurt base, the green sauce with a spicy punch and the Hive sauce is a sweet & savory blend. I personally favored the green sauce so much that I asked for extra on top, along with the creamy white sauce for balance.
Chicken Bowl – 5/5
Every ingredient in the bowl tasted so fresh, with vibrant colors enhancing the visual appearance. Since I chose all the toppings, each flavor was able to complement the others perfectly. The chicken, seasoned with Flavor Hive’s unique spice blend, was tender and slightly salty in the best way. Fresh cilantro added a crispness that even cilantro haters might appreciate. The onion crumbles were delightfully crunchy, and I loved the texture of each bite within the bowl. Adding extra sauce was definitely the right choice—the green sauce’s spice elevated the taste. For those who can’t handle spice, I recommend opting for the Hive sauce instead.
Beef Bowl – 4.5/5
Unlike Chipotle’s steak chunks, the beef here is ground, which was not my favorite. The smaller beef pieces lacked the bite I was hoping for, and without onion crumbles this time, the texture felt less dynamic compared to the chicken bowl. However, the portion of protein was generous, making the bowl fully filled. The balanced addition of sauce made for a perfectly mild flavor, not too spicy or too sweet. With the right customizations, I believe this could easily be a five-star dish.
Drinks – 5/5
Flavor Hive offers a wide variety of beverages, including a fountain machine with a multitude of flavors. I tried several, and the strawberry watermelon was a standout for me, with the Mexican Cola at a close second. With many different choices, I would say ordering the fountain cup to refill your drink is the best way to try them all. Next time I visit, I hope to try their signature lattes, specifically the Tiramisu Latte, which comes with an actual piece of tiramisu on top.
Another thing that stood out to me about Flavor Hive was the exceptional service the staff members provide. They were friendly and attentive throughout my visit. When a cucumber topping was mistakenly added to an order, the server quickly took every single piece out without any hesitation or attitude. Not only that, but also while I was eating, the staff frequently met me with warm smiles. This made the restaurant such a beautiful, welcoming atmosphere.
Flavor Hive has succeeded in creating a dining experience that has uniqueness, flavor and hospitality. From its humble food truck beginnings to its first storefront, this is a restaurant that will exceed any expectations.
