Some say that the best way to improve yourself is to help others, and with the abundance of foundations, causes and charities in the United States alone, it’s logical to consider such a statement true. The cause for such an organization can be anything from raising breast cancer awareness to providing clean water to those who don’t have access.
The ASPCA, or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is a non-profit, nationwide charity that rescues and shelters animals that have been abused, neglected, or no long have a home. It also acts with the government (at all levels) to pass humane laws.
The ASPCA not only works on its own to provide animals adequate care – but also other shelters. Because the ultimate goal of shelters is to give the animals new homes, they hold adoption fairs often.
This brings up the question: Is the only way to help by giving them money or adopting? The answer to that is No. The ASPCA encourages volunteering at local shelters and donating toys or foods for animals.
There are many opportunities to get involved – PetFinder.com even has a tab under which one could search for local shelters. Each shelter has contact information, so get in contact if volunteering sounds appealing. Also, on the ASPCA website, there is an entire page of ideas which lists the “best ways to aid local animals.” The suggestions require varying time commitments, but any and all ideas would be beneficial to the animals.
Finally, if adoption is enticing, there are adoption fairs every Saturday hosted by K-9 Lifesavers Dog Rescue.org, at various predetermined areas. There are great many open to visits, in this area. Each shelter has many animals in need of a home, and ready to be adopted.
This holiday giving season, remember to help those who don’t have a voice – man’s furry, feathered, and scaly companions.
