On Tuesday March 26th the McLean high school administration revealed its
plans to change Highlander Time. The new Highlander Time will be held daily after 1st
block (1st/2ndperiod) for 35 minutes. Students will be assigned to one of their teachers
during this period. The assigned teacher will change on a set-interval, to give students
access to all each other teachers 2-3 times per month. Students will also be able to see
a certain teacher more if needed. The new policy will be implemented at the start of the
2013-2014 school year.
The changes were made by a committee of administrators, counselors and
teachers, after weeks planning and discussion with students and teachers about
methods to improve Highlander Time. The committee offered three possible changes to
Highlander Time, which were emailed to teachers to be voted upon. The option which
had the changes mentioned above received the most votes.
Principal Ellen Reily’s new administration came to the conclusion that Highlander
Time was not being used productively by students, many of whom opted to sleep-in
rather than receive extra academic assistance.
Highlander Time’s current model is 1 hour and 5 minutes every Wednesday with
classes being shortened by 10% across the board to compensate.
