Many students at McLean have been taking steps in helping out those in the community and organizing charity events. Sophomores Kayla Waysome and Patricia de Guzman, both marketing students who are members of DECA, held an Art Show at the Old Firehouse on Jan. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. where they showcased art that was made as a collaborative effort by the students of the art honor society and the special education department of the McLean pyramid.
“I think it went well,” Waysome said. “I feel like we informed the people who came to our art show about how talented people are with mental disabilities, and although we can’t fix mental disabilities, we can support the talents of the people challenged with them.”
These art pieces are to be donated to an organization called Arts for Autism which holds a yearly fashion show gala/art auction where the proceeds go to the Autism Society, helping families in northern Virginia affected by autism. The fashion show will be taking place on Feb. 2. Students interested in modeling at this gala should contact Waysome or de Guzman.
Waysome and de Guzman will be competing at the DECA state leadership conference, and this organized community service art show event was part of their service project.
