If someone were to look down the hallways of McLean High School, it is almost certain that every girl will be wearing some kind of boot. Whether they are Uggs or riding boots, it is clear that boots are one of the more favored choices of footwear.
The most popular choice of boots, Uggs, has been around since World War I, but they reached their peak during the 20th century. Now it is normal to see anyone from ages 3 to 80 wearing different styles, like those with buttons or designs, and in colors ranging anywhere from the traditional brown to purple and blue.
“They are comfy and stylish. It adds a sleek look and is amazing to see on a man’s muscular calf. It is more fashionable for me than it is [on a] woman,” sophomore Jack Saunders said.
Uggs are most popular among preteens and teenage girls because they are easy to wear and comfortable. They can be dressed up with a skirt or complete a laid-back look with sweatpants.
However, some believe that Uggs are overstated and are a lazy way to express one’s choice of style. There are hundreds of different styles of boots that can pull together an outfit and give it the “wow-factor” with a much more unique (and sometimes affordable) effect.
Riding-style boots that are a rich chestnut brown or black combat boots are starting to trend. It is easy to find more unique styles of boots than Uggs that may follow the basics but come in different versions. These options gives girls’ outfits a unique look, and instead of having them blend in with everyone else, different boots allow them to stand out.
Often, it is the boots that are the statement factor. The basic, most popular colors are browns and blacks, giving an outfit a classic touch. But for those who like a little more to their shoes, some have buckles that zig-zag and cross over. Others have patterns etched into the sides or fabrics that make a design around the circumference of the shoe.
Don’t be afraid to step out of those Uggs and into something new and different.
