Ever notice how people just gave up writing letters? Honestly, the only things that come in the mail nowadays are bills to pay and advertisement magazines.
Why has this happened? Well, the first thing that comes to mind is Social Media. Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, and so on; they’re all examples of why the typical paper letters aren’t being sent anymore. It’s easier and probably cheaper to just sit down at the computer desk and type up a few abbreviations and hashtags.
And that’s another thing! Who on earth decided that hashtags should be a thing? Honestly, it’s like I’m reading a note from a robot or something.
But isn’t the fact that it’s not as easy to write a letter make it even more special? Think about it. The person who sends you a letter is personally writing it with his/her own handwriting and went through all the trouble of buying an envelope and a stamp, and driving to the post office to mail the letter just for you.
Call me old fashioned, but I just like the idea of opening up the mailbox and finally getting a long awaited letter from an old friend. Even the feel of the physical paper is special and it’s not just a bunch of pixels on a screen.
I hate it how older people talk down to me when they mention letters and newspapers. They say, “Oh yeah, I read that in the Newspaper, you know, that thing that’s made up of a bunch of pieces of paper and you have to run outside in the morning to pick it up?” Seriously, I’m a journalist! I’m pretty sure I’m familiar with what a newspaper is.
Another thing to consider when you’re writing a letter is the fact that you’re giving a bunch of people jobs. Think about it. Above all, there’s the mailman, then there’s the people at the postoffice, then there’s the people who are responsible for shipping your letter, and the pilots who fly the delivery plane, and finally you have the people who actually produce the paper and the ink you’re using.
Trust me, I know. Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with old friends who aren’t close to home, I can confirm that firsthand. But I also like to write letters and postcards to my closest friends, just to show them how much I miss them and care for them.
There are so many benefits to writing a letter compared to just sending a text message. I have nothing against technology. I think it’s a great tool, and personally I wouldn’t know how the world could work without it nowadays. I just believe that traditions should be maintained and i think that writing letters is just one of the ways to do so and make someone’s day.
