As I found out that a new Pokémon game was coming out, I really didn’t get my hopes up because I figured that it’d be just like the others before it, so at first I decided to leave it on the store shelf.
As the game became popular at school, I found out from my friends some details about the game that captured my attention.
So I finally decided to give the game a try.
The first thing I noticed were the graphics; unlike Pokémon Black 2, which was the latest version of Pokémon up until X and Y, the characters and the scenery are no longer pixilated but have more like a modern graphic look to them.
The next thing I was pleased to find out was the fact that my wish of personalizing my own Pokémon trainer had become a reality. As the game starts you can choose your gender, like in other games, and your hair color. Later on in the game there are stores which carry clothes and accessories for my trainer and salons to change my trainer’s hairstyles and colors.
Also, when my character shrinks to avatar mode, it no longer looks squashed like it used to.
So the game looks good, but what about the gameplay? The gameplay is incredible. Like in other Pokémon games, you start off meeting up with friends and picking your starter Pokémon. In Pokémon X and Y, you get to choose between Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie.
Now the battles begin. The Pokémon in the battle scenes move and attack each other almost like in the cartoon series.
In addition to the motion, there are some Pokémon who are able to MegaEvolve, which means that thanks to a bracelet that the trainer wears and a special stone that a Pokémon holds, the Pokémon can evolve yet another time.
I can now interact with my Pokémon and train them thanks to Pokémon Amie. Here I can pet, feed, and play with my Pokemon.
In addition to a bike, a trainer gets the option of using rollerblades which is useful in areas where there are rails that the avatar can skate on.
The storyline that the game presents isn’t really anything special. I have four friends following me around for the entire game trying to fight me and beat me which gets pretty annoying. And then there’s the bad guys, Team Flare. They’re just like Team Rocket or Team Plasma, but the twist is that their leader is a guy who works with Professor Sycamore, a good guy who I run into every now and then.
The one thing that confuses me though is the addition of Fairy Type Pokémon. This aspect slightly altered the effectiveness of some powers against others. But what excites me about the Fairy Type Pokémon is the newest Eevee evolution, Sylveon.
Overall, I think that Pokémon X has brought on a new generation of gameplay and game style which is both awesome and smart. I give it a four star rating.
