In a world dominated by streaming services, many people question whether movie theaters are still relevant. With Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Max offering thousands of movies and television shows from the comfort of home, it is understandable why some people would rather stay on the couch than buy a pricey movie ticket. However, despite the convenience of streaming, movie theaters provide an experience that can’t be recreated at home.
While streaming allows viewers to pause a movie, check their phones and complete tasks, theaters demand your full attention. The massive screen, loud sound system and dark atmosphere make it easier to become fully immersed in the movie.
One of the biggest advantages of theaters is the sense of excitement they create. Sitting with people excited to see the same movie, laughing together, gasping during unexpected plot twists and cheering during memorable scenes makes these moments part of an unforgettable experience.
“I love to see the reactions of strangers around me,” junior Eva Braccia said. “It just makes the overall experience more exciting.”
People also disconnect from everyday distractions such as scrolling through social media, answering texts and doing chores. In a movie theater, the focus is entirely on the movie and for a few hours, the audience can escape into a different world.
Movie theater experiences also bring people together. Friends meet up to see highly anticipated releases, families spend valuable time together and couples can enjoy date nights. The experience of sharing it with others often makes it memorable even if the movie didn’t meet expectations.
“You can bond over the experience together and if the movie had a large impact on you, it’s fun to talk about it after with your friends,” freshman Mia Winn said.
However, theaters aren’t always a perfect experience. Ticket prices have increased dramatically over the years and snacks are often overpriced. Many people argue that paying for a streaming service subscription offers much more value for their money.
“The price of a ticket usually makes me nervous to go to a movie because I don’t want to spend so much money on a ticket or candy,” sophomore Jude Murray said. “I usually see going to the theater as more of a treat.”
Although people spend money on experiences all the time. Concerts, sporting events, amusement parks and vacations all cost money, yet people continue to pay because of the memories those experiences create. In the movie theater, you are also paying for an experience that can’t be replicated at home.
The continued success of major movie releases proves that audiences still value the lasting experience. Every year, blockbuster films attract millions of viewers who choose to watch them in the movie theater as opposed to waiting for them to appear on streaming platforms.
“I think the movie theater experience is appealing because it’s fun to get out of the house and relax in the theater with a slushie and popcorn,” sophomore Savannah Alton said. “It’s also fun to be around people who are experiencing it at the same time.”
While streaming services are incredibly convenient and aren’t going away, they have not replaced everything that makes movie theaters special. There is something exciting about buying a ticket, finding your seat, scouting in previews for other movies to potentially watch and watching a story on a huge screen.
Movie theaters are worth going to because they offer excitement and shared experiences that can’t be duplicated at home. While technology continues to change how we consume entertainment, the magic of movie theaters still stays relevant.
