Chance the Rapper, an upcoming Chicago rap artist, embarked on his 1st national headliner tour on Oct. 25 and made his first ever stop in the DC metro area on Oct. 27 at the Fillmore.
Dozens of fans lined up outside in hopes of purchasing a ticket at the door, all in vain as the venue had sold out of ticket 3 days after making the tickets available to the general public. Chance’s tour handle “The Social Experiment Tour” is aptly named when the context of Chance’s personality and discography are taken into account.
Born Chancelor Bennett, a quirky, hyperactive African American from the southeastern side of Chicago, Ill. (sometimes called “Chiraq” due to its violent history and frightening crime rates), Chance’s style and sound is surprisingly positive and uplifting given his age.
Chance’s attitude is even more remarkable so given the grim, unapologetic, reckless personas and musical sound of his fellow Chicagoan peers, such as Chief Keef. He opened up his show with the somber, reflective “Acid Rap,” reminiscing about the lives of friends whose lives were cut short due to Chicago’s violent youth culture. He then effortlessly livened the mood with energetic crowd favorites “Favorite Song” and “Juice.”
After the show, Chance made sure to meet and take pictures with fans, truly appreciative of the amazing support his fans bless him with (He called me his “homie” and “hella real.”) Really cool guy, great music.
