Marked as “the most stacked indoor track meet in America” with over 6,000 competitors spanning from over 600 teams, the 2026 VA Showcase was one of the most highly anticipated meets of the year.
Nationally dominant runners such as senior Quincy Wilson from Bullis High School who competed in the recent 2024 summer olympics, senior Sophie Rambo from Grassfield High School who holds nine state championships and has won back to back years of the VA Showcase, senior Tate Taylor from San Antonio Harlan School who holds the National under-20 record for the 100 meter dash, and many more were set to attend this meet in Virginia beach.
“The competition was fierce and super lively,” senior Malcolm Andrews said. “Everyone was loud and energetic at every race and there were so many eyes on the track at all times.”
McLean’s team did not disappoint, with numerous runners qualifying for regionals and states and multiple runners setting school records.
For the boys, Andrews broke the schools’ 300 meter dash record with a time of 35.91. Additionally, the 4×200 meter relay consisting of seniors Owen Rasmussen, Stephen Shields, Andrews and sophomore Peyton Tabor also broke the school record with a time of 1:31.97.
“The record is great but I’m looking ahead at bigger things,” Andrews said. “I’ve had my eyes on those sprinting records for years and now I’m working my way up to the regional, state and hopefully national level.”
On the girls side, junior long-distance runner Jaidyn Buday broke her own school record with a time of 4:55.07. Against the fierce competition, McLean was able to find lots of success.
Aside from school records, many runners qualified for the district, regional and state tournaments. Andrews qualified for regionals in the 55m, 300m and states in the 4×200 along with Rasmussen, Shields and Tabor. Shields also qualified for regionals in the 300m and the 4×400 with sophomore Bryce Yang, Tabor and Rasmussen. Senior Carter Lineweaver and junior Addison Buday qualified for districts for the mile and the 1k along with seniors Tommy Milward and Catherine Thomas in the 1k. Junior Sydney Walker qualified for districts in the 1k and the two mile and Thomas qualified for regionals in the two mile. Additionally, almost every runner at the meet recorded a personal record in at least one of their events.
Entering the district, regional and state tournaments, the team is looking in great shape. Numerous runners have been grinding all indoor season for the chance to shine in the postseason.
“This meet was a good look into the competition we will see in the last rounds of the postseason,” Lineweaver said. “We’re preparing with hard practices and the consensus around the team is that we can win.”
