On Tuesday, October 20th, McLeans Girls Flag Football team took on Langley and Madison in a historic first home game as well as senior night.
McLean’s first game was against Langley. They started off strong when junior Mary Rudin took a screen pass to the house to make the score 6-0 on their first drive of the game. Following a quick stop on defense, the Highlanders drove the ball down the field once again, and scored on a quarterback sneak by senior Addie Saunderhauff.
“We had really good energy to start the game,” Rudin said.
The first half ended similar to how it started. Two more defensive stops led to two more touchdowns by Mary Rudin giving her a first-half hat-trick. McLean went into the break up 29-0.
“We were killing it,” head coach Scott Davis said. “The defense didn’t give up at all and the offense was cooking.”
The second half followed the theme of the first. Junior Addie Parish and freshman Athena Monken each added touchdowns of their own to close the game at 42-0.
McLean’s second game, now against Madison, started off slower than the first. Both teams drove all the way down the field on their opening drives, only to get stopped on fourth down and come up empty.
Eventually, McLean broke the seal with a touchdown from junior Sophie Knudson to go up 6-0. After several more defensive stops from both teams, the Highlanders went into the half with the same score.
However, on the final drive of the game, Madison snagged an interception. After driving down the field, in the final seconds of the game, they scored a touchdown, knotting the score to 6-6. The game would end in a tie.
“We’ve got to just keep working and building the team bond,” Davis said. “We also need to work on the defense a little more, lockdown on pulling flags.”
