On October 5th, 2013, McLean High School held the final round of McLean Idol, a unique opportunity in which students are able to show off their vocals. With only 13 advancing to the final round the competition heated up.
The contestants included Nicole Sheehan, Helena Doms, Tori Garcia, Josh Delgado, Jennifer Rose, Jeffrey Nolan Emily Swett, Genesis Pedraza, Jasmine Gomez, Rachel Lawhead, Alex Stone Abby Huston, and Renee Zhang. Each contest was judged by Walter “Bobby” McCoy, Kelly Gray and Jane Margulies Kalbfeld.
“My expectation for the kids tonight is to have fun and to own that song,” Judge Walter McCoy said.
Every performance has it’s own special touch whether it was simply the singers voice, a guitar or dancing. However, there are only three possible titles, which are determined by the audience. By the time the competition came to a close, most constants were tired, but happy they were able to perform.
“ I’m exhausted, but at the same time invigorated”, contestant Rachel Law head said.
3rd place went to Renee Zhang, singing “Stand up for Love” by Destiny’s child. 2nd place went to Abby Huston, who sang and performed on guitar “The Broadripple is Burning” by Morgot and the Nuclear So and So’s. And finally, 1st place went to Josh Delgado singing Angel by Jon Secada.
McLean provides students with the opportunity too not only have fun, but also to engage in healthy competition with peers. McLean Idol Also acts as a creative outlet for aspiring singers.
