Vampire Weekend is known for their upbeat-sound and silly lyrics, but in their new album, Modern Vampires of the City, they show that they’ve definitely grown a lot as musicians
This album is more mature differing from their 2010 album, Contra, with whimsical songs like Horchata, a song about memories from a sunny vacation with an ex- girlfriend, their lyrics are silly “In December drinking Horchata, I’d look psychotic in a balaclava Winter’s cold is too much to handle pincher crabs that pinch at your sandals.” In this song they incorporated their unique use of the xylophone and the tambourine, showing off their quirky and carefree persona as a band.
In Modern Vampires of the City lead singer Ezra Koenig sings “The gloves are off, the wisdom teeth are out? What you on about..” and “I’m stronger now, I’m ready for the house” indicating maturity and wisdom. “Everyone’s dying but girl you’re not old yet,” also brings up the more serious topic of death. Their lyrics not only become more meaningful, but their beat slows down and incorporates a warmer sound with slow chords of the bass guitar and synthetic string instruments made from a keyboard, maturing their trademark ‘baroque pop’ sound.
This album marks their growth as a band, however they have not evolved so much that they stray too far from their old ways. They continue to be unconventional and keep that playful undertone. This album appeals to more people with a mellow rhythm, but their eccentricity still satisfies old fans.
