Every year, the second Sunday of May is dedicated to appreciating all Mothers. But what is the perfect gift to say “Thanks for being there Mom?” From past experiences, the one thing mother’s want for their big day is to spend time with their busy children. So this year, instead of just buying her a bouquet of flowers, set May 12 aside for a day with Mom. Unsure of what to do? Here are some ideas.
1. Mother’s Day Brunch: Whether you stay in or go out, celebrate Mother’s day right as you wake up with brunch. Let your mom sleep in and serve her a special breakfast in bed, or head into town and have brunch at her favorite place. It’s a great way to start off her day and let’s her know that you didn’t wait until that day to plan. Some brunch suggestions include Founding Farmers (Washington, D.C., or Potomac, MD) and Vermilion (Alexandria, VA).
2. Mother’s Day 5k Dash: If you would prefer to start your morning in a healthier way, a good activity with your mom would be the Mother’s Day 5k Dash. Starting at eight AM, the scenic run goes right through Rock Creek Park and is the perfect way to not only bond with your mother but also celebrate and honor all mother’s across the DMV. 3. Mother’s Day at Mt. Vernon: If your family has little kids or your mother enjoys visiting historic places, Mother’s Day Weekend at Mt. Vernon would be the perfect activity. Regular tours are still available as well as a talk with Lady Martha Washington who reminisces on motherhood and gives advice to her granddaughter. You can also take a walk through the Mt. Vernon gardens which has just reached full bloom.
4. Mother’s Day Hike: If your mother prefers fresh air and the great outdoors, a hike and a family picnic would be ideal. Stay close to home and visit Great Falls National Park, just 15 miles outside is Washington, D.C. Or travel south to the Shenandoah National Park for 200,000 acres of hiking trails, camping grounds, skyline drives, and waterfalls. Both places offer beautiful views to share with your mother on her special day.
5. Mother’s Day Dinner Cruise: Finish up the celebration with a dinner cruise along the Potomac River. For what other way is there then to end your mother’s big day with a great dinner while passing the D.C. memorials on a cool spring evening? Cruises also include drinks on the deck and dancing. Look at Spirit of Washington (http://www.spiritofwashington.com/Washington-DC/mothersday) and Dandy (http://www.dandydinnerboat.com/holidaycruises/mothersday.shtml) for special Mother’s Day rates.
