As the school year comes to a close, here are the top seven vacation spots to visit with friends and family.
1.The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ HoleLocated about 19 minutes from McLean High School, The Water Mine is a popular waterpark with slides, water sprays and a relaxing lazy river. Tickets are around $22, and there are attractions for all ages. It’s a great summer spot because it helps you cool off while still being fun and active with friends. The mix of thrill rides and chill areas makes it perfect for hot days.
2. Perch PuttAbout a nine minute drive from McLean, Perch Putt is an 18-hole rooftop mini golf course located on top of Capital One Center. Tickets are about $17, and kids under six are free. It’s especially fun in the summer because of the outdoor setting, city views and relaxed social atmosphere. The rooftop vibe makes it a great place to hang out with friends in the evening.
3. Scott’s Run Nature PreserveApproximately 12 minutes away from McLean High School, Scott’s Run Nature Preserve features a scenic hiking loop with waterfalls and views of the Potomac River. Admission is free, though it may have temporary closures for maintenance. It’s a great summer activity for getting outside, staying active and enjoying nature. The shaded trails and water features make it a refreshing break from the heat.
4. Sandy Point State ParkFrom McLean, Sandy Point State Park is located about one hour and 20 minutes away and is a large park on the Chesapeake Bay with a beach, swimming areas and views of the Bay Bridge. Entry costs around $4-$5 per person in the summer. It’s a perfect destination for a full-day trip with friends, offering water activities like swimming and fishing and walking on the sandy shore. The beach setting gives a vacation-like feel without going too far.
5. Montgomery County Agricultural FairLocated 38 minutes away from McLean High School, this annual fair in Gaithersburg runs from Aug. 14 to Aug. 22, and features rides, food, live entertainment and over 5,000 animals. Tickets are about $13-$18, with additional costs for rides and parking. It’s a great summer event because there’s a large variety of activities from carnival games to concerts. The lively atmosphere makes it one of the most exciting seasonal activities.
6. A Picnic at Gravelly PointGravelly Point, a 30 minute drive from McLean, is a riverside park known for its close-up views of planes landing at Reagan National Airport. It’s free to visit and has picnic areas, open fields and bike trails. This is a great summer hangout spot because you can relax with friends while watching planes fly just overhead. The open space and waterfront views make it perfect for sunsets and casual outings.
7. Smithsonian National Zoological ParkLocated 35 minutes away from McLean High School in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian National Zoo is a free-admission zoo with over 2,000 animals. Visitors need to reserve free tickets online in advance. It’s a great summer activity because you can spend hours walking outdoors and exploring different exhibits. The combination of animals, nature and learning makes it both fun and interesting.
