McLean girls tennis rolled past Yorktown on Tuesday with a 9-0 win. Yorktown came in as a strong district opponent, but McLean never let the match get close.
Singles matches set the tone early. McLean’s players stayed calm and scored smart points. They kept rallies steady and finished when they had the chance. One by one, the Highlanders picked up all six singles wins.
There were a few close games, but McLean handled the pressure well. Players stayed composed and did not let the momentum swing. That consistency made all the difference in the end.
“Our doubles team is starting to come together and the singles team looks good,” head coach Mackenzie Rankin said. “We are starting the season off 3-0.”
The doubles teams kept the momentum going. McLean looked more connected and confident. Players talked more and covered the court better. The team closed out all three matches to finish the sweep.
“We came in focused and ready,” sophomore Roxanna Sharafi said. “Everyone trusted each other and did their part.”
Another key was consistency on serve and return. McLean players put a high percentage of first serves in and attacked second serves. That gave them control early in the points.
The result says a lot about this team. It was not just a win, it was a complete performance against a good opponent.
The win was not just about the score. Beating a strong district opponent in this way shows how much depth McLean has across its lineup. Each player handled their match and the team looked more connected compared to earlier matches this season.
That matchup will prove to be a huge win for McLean, especially if the team keeps working to improve its doubles play and stay consistent in singles. If McLean continues to play the way it did against Yorktown, it will be in a strong position moving forward in district play.
“I think we really excel when the whole team just perseveres,” Sharafi said. “The team bond is becoming stronger every day and it’s showing.”
