When the last pitch of the baseball season is thrown at Nationals Park, the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. goes quiet. The sea of fans in red jerseys disappear, the gates lock and the surrounding neighborhood slips into offseason hibernation. Silence doesn’t last long, however, as Nationals Park is transformed into a Winter Wonderfest each holiday season.
The baseball diamond was replaced with a frosty overcoat, lit up with attractions for family and friends to enjoy with one another. Attendees of the festival were greeted by a tunnel of lights as they made their way to the field. The end of the tunnel was even brighter as a full view of the transformed field provided a beautiful sight and an unforgettable photo op.
The Winter Wonderfest was highlighted by 12 main attractions, cleverly designed for the 12 Days of Christmas, ranging from brilliant art sculptures to rides one would commonly find at a major amusement park.
For the sports lovers in attendance, the event featured a plethora of athletic-related activities. Many flocked to the “Snowball Showdown” stand, in which competitors showed off their arms in snowball-throwing competitions based on speed, precision and accuracy for fans to enjoy.
Additionally, the baselines were transformed into an epic nine-hole mini golf course filled with references and odes to the Washington Nationals. Golfers were challenged to navigate through signed helmets and bats to reach the hole, enjoying an offseason staple for professional MLB players.
The most unique attraction of the event was easily the giant seesaw, a perfect blend of childhood nostalgia and thrill. Riders soared up to ten feet high at the top of the seesaw, providing a great view of the surrounding area.
The crown jewel of the entire Winter Wonderfest was the Blizzard Run, a 40-foot tall, 100-foot long racing slide in Center Field. Slide-goers trekked up stairs to the top of the slide, feeling as though one was climbing a mountain in the frosty air. From the top, it was a race to the bottom as riders snowballed down the field level, with the ride providing the best 360-degree views of the night of both the festival and stadium.
Overall the event was a smashing success, a night filled with smiles and cheers for all in attendance with loved ones.
Winter Wonderfest at Nationals Park ended on Dec. 30th, 2025. Now, the gates of Nationals Park will be closed as fans will wait for them to defrost until April 3rd, 2026, in which the Washington Nationals will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers for their 2026 home opener.
