The Split Ends, composed of senior guitarist/singer Julien DiPatri, senior bass/singer Lillie Roland, and senior drummer Sophia Aleyd, released their first album titled Self-Titled on Oct. 17. The album consists of five original songs, each following the indie rock genre and dominated by drums and guitar.
“Lillie and I would write the lyrics of our songs and Sophia would compose her own drums,” DiPatri said. “Lillie would mostly write about her love life and I would write about my relationships with my friends and family.”
The band recorded through Vanguard Studios, located in Chantilly. They worked with Nathan Ehara, who helped record and produce the album in the studio. The group would practice together weekly on Mondays, and had eight sessions where they would record for four to seven hours at a time. The process, while time consuming, ended up being completely worth the wait.
“The entire process of making our album took about six months,” DiPatri said. “We started as juniors and finished as seniors, so we had a lot of other things going on but we worked really hard on getting our music out.”
The Split Ends released their single NDH on July 4, giving their fans a preview of their music to come. The song focuses on self sabotage in the context of relationships both romantically and within family, following a similar theme to the rest of their album.
“The album as a whole was very personal to us,” DiPatri said. “We really wanted to convey the different emotions we’ve all felt as high school students going through our own battles.”
Along with NDH, the album has songs titled Repeat, Right Through Me, and Hypnotized. Each song explores the different struggles each member has gone through and their process of overcoming trauma.
The album can be streamed on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify and Youtube Music. Along with listening online, the band performs live a few times throughout the year to show off their talent.
“Over the past year, we’ve been able to perform a lot live,” Aleyd said. “We’ve performed at Crescendo Studios twice, The Pie Shop, Sacred Roller Skate Shop, Vanguard, and some of our friends’ birthday parties.”
Along with these performances, the band has a gig coming up on Nov 1 at Haydees. The Split Ends will continue writing new songs and producing music together, while growing their career as a band.
