The JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention serves as an outlet for students to learn and grow as journalists. This semiannual event, sponsored by Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association, allows students to expand their knowledge of different aspects of journalism. The convention attracts around 5,000 attendees, the largest turnout of nationwide student journalists and advisers.

“I’m here for the opportunity to engage with publications across the country,” said Annika Bjorklund, nonfiction section head editor of the George Mason High School literary magazine.

The conference includes a wide range of seminars from Nov. 22-23. Additionally, there are pre-convention workshops Nov. 21. Here young reporters can learn about writing, design, editing, team bonding, and more.

“I learned about being a better leader and being able to get my  classmates to be better motivated,” said Colby Williams, business manager of the Independence High School yearbook.

This year, the convention will be held in the Washington Marriott Wardman Park in Washington D.C.

“My favorite thing about the convention was the locality because it helped minimize costs,” Bjorklund said.

The event also has an exhibit hall, contests, awards, and NBC’s Chuck Todd as keynote speaker.

“This convention has given us new ideas and inspiration and upon return to school we will apply some of these ideas to our current publication,” Bjorklund said.
