Cuphead Review: A great game, but not for some

Refreshing, new indie game sets new standards for platforming

Ross Oliver, Reporter

Cuphead is a 2D platform shooter, stylized in a 1930s rubber hose animation which is either played in a single player or co-op mode. It was developed by StudioMDHR Entertainment, an independent video game developer, and is available to play on Xbox One or P.C.

In the game you either play as one of the brothers, Cuphead or Mugman, who walk into the Devil’s Casino and manage to go on a win streak in craps. However, the manager, King Dice, calls upon the devil to raise the stakes. The devil makes them a deal, either roll a winning hand and own the casino, or roll snake eyes and their souls are his. They roll snake eyes are forced to claim the souls of people who made similar deals with the devil to survive.

The game play is entertaining and addicting, going from level to level to beat multi-phase bosses and reclaim their souls. Also, the mechanics are fluid and easy to adapt to as you progress in the game. Aside from a couple glitches where some enemies can’t be killed, the game runs smoothly. However, there has been numerous complaints about the difficulty in the game, with a games journalist struggling on the first level. The platforming is intense and requires quick reactions and mastery of the mechanics, so it isn’t for everyone. While the levels are challenging, when you defeat the boss it can be extremely rewarding, and it will give a tutorial for every single mechanic if you need help.

In addition, the art style and music in the game is spectacular. The rubber hose animation is amazing to see and the music puts you right in the 1930’s. Even the animations and backgrounds in the game are hand-drawn, which is shocking. Because of this, you can really see the effort put into the game, which shines throughout the game.

Furthermore, the price point of the game is outstanding. The amount of content you receive would justify the price of a triple A game at $60. However, the cost of the game is only $20, which is insane since most games now are stingy with their content at $60. A truly great game at a great price

Cuphead is an amazing game, based on the excellent price point, with great mechanics, and game play. This is no doubt worth its price of admission and is a game I would recommend it to everyone who enjoys difficult and intense platforming games. This is a must buy.
