The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club is ready to face a new year along with new responsibilities.

The club hosts an annual, school-wide event before the prom to emphasize the risk of all the destructive decisions associated with prom. Throughout the year, the members put up signs all-around McLean to promote safe decisions.

“[The students] benefit from a club teaching them about the dangers of drunk driving,” club sponsor and P.E. teacher Joseph Muskett said.

Initially, the club’s acronym stood for Students Against Drunk Driving. The members switched the name to Students Against Destructive Decisions to involve more issues teens face in addition to drunk driving.

“I don’t think you can give the students too much information about drunk driving,” Muskett said.

The SADD club started around five years ago.

One of the first members of the club, Rachel West, helped the club grow and become larger. She in now a McLean alumni as she graduated around five years ago.

Many other students have helped this club grow just as West did. Leadership has blossomed in this club’s environment. The members work together to help the community become safer.

The members of SADD work well together and enjoy being in the club, despite the age differences between some of them.

“It’s a good mix of all levels, . . . freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, males, females,” Muskett said. “As a sponsor, you give minimum direction as it’s [the students’] club. The ideas they have and the energy they bring to the club is exceptional.”
