The newest addition of the Star Wars family, ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story, is an impressive debut in Disney’s Star Wars spinoff-series. Anchored by strong performances from co-leads Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, as well as a tight-knit plot that remains focused on capturing the plans to the Empire’s newest super weapon, the Death Star. The film proves that Disney has found the right combination to bring the force to all of us for years to come.

Rogue One is set directly before the original 1977 Star Wars, and gives necessary background into the rebels’ struggle against the evil empire. Although none of the main characters from the original trilogy star in this film, there are enough familiar faces to keep fans satisfied. That being said, the new additions are well written and integral to the overarching Star Wars mythos.

Protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), is a renegade given a chance to help the Rebel Alliance in their fight against the Empire. Diego Luna as Captain Cassian Andor works with Erso and others in attempt to steal the plans of the Death Star. With the construction of the Death Star nearly complete, the Empire will soon have the power to destroy entire planets, which makes the rebels’ mission essential to in their quest to save the galaxy.

Jones exceeds expectations, as her portrayal of Erso gives the Star Wars universe another strong, female lead. After proving herself as a dramatic actress, the question remained whether Jones was capable of leading a blockbuster film. Immediately Jones proved she was up to the task.

The movie takes us right to the front lines of the battle, and there is a growing suspense in every scene that no character is safe. Ben Mendelsohn’s role as Krennic, the film’s primary antagonist, is equally evil and frightening, however the true terror lies in the familiar villain Darth Vader. With the impending threat of planetary destruction hanging over their heads, it is near impossible for the rebels to find comfort in these troubled times.

Throughout the film, the cinematography is flawless and the music hits all the right notes. Rogue One blends action and drama seamlessly, helping expand the Star Wars universe in the right direction. In a down year for blockbuster films, Rogue One is our only hope.
