On March 8, McLean’s Food for Neighbors (FFN) branch, McPantry, held a collection of food where members of the club received bags of food from donors in the community and sorted it at Luther Jackson Middle School.
“It was really nice seeing how many people helped and the immense [amount of] support we got,” said junior Raha Golshani, a member of FFN. “We are motivated to build up the McPantry and continue to spread the word.”
McLean’s FFN sponsor, biology teacher Ericka Senegar, attended the food collection along with student volunteers. Combining McLean’s FFN members with members from other schools, there were 35 drivers and around 100 volunteers to sort and transport the food bins. Each package contained around 2 months worth of food for each family.
“Food is a human right,” Senegar said. “It’s not right for humans to not receive the amount of food they need.”
The next time that FFN will collect food again will be on April 26. Items that are accepted as donations include granola bars, Ziploc bags, juices, fruit cups, shelf stable milks and hygiene products such as deodorants, soaps and more.
“We had 484 homes to visit this past weekend,” Senegar said. “We can feed everyone if we pool our resources and come together.”
