McLean Art and Literature club held a meeting on Thursday, May 1, to educate members on literature and an expansion of their current activities. Founded in January, the club plans to foster a deeper appreciation for humanities among McLean students.
“I have come to enjoy humanities more because I think the intersection between art and literature is very interesting,” sophomore Verity Oh said. “I like the way they can be analyzed jointly to offer different interpretations of works that rely on both visual and narrative aspects.”
During the meeting, members learned about applying themes in dystopian books to real life examples. This included how topics mentioned in “1984” by George Orwell and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury connected to current developments, like social media.
“McLean Art and Literature aims to create an inclusive environment for students to explore the rich connections among humanity subjects and use their skills to help make a better community,” president and sophomore Lexin Zhu said.
Zhu then introduced members to opportunities for service hours and awards such as the President’s Volunteer Service Award in the upcoming year.
“We plan to attract more students to participate and let club members take more initiatives in various meaningful projects,” Zhu said. “We have already been making cards for hospitalized kids, and we also want our members to make their own art and lit presentations.”
