On March 15, the McLean Community Center hosted the annual Summer and Part-time Job Fair, showcasing different local jobs. The event was attended by students from Langley, Marshall and McLean High School looking to fill their summer productively.
“The jobs that were there were interesting, and they seemed very nice,” senior Isa Guertin said. “It was helpful for looking into the job that I am planning to do.”
The event gave attendees the chance to learn about different job openings and communicate with representatives directly.
“The fair basically serves up opportunities for students,” college and career specialist Mary Barnes said. “Students can have access to employers who want to hire high schoolers.”
The fair featured over a dozen booths, with options ranging from children’s academies to landscaping, catering to a diverse population of students.
“This was a great event for juniors since we got to see the potential money and life experience involved,” junior Rayyan Mohamed said.
While the event provided opportunities to earn money, the event also aimed to motivate students to take on the responsibility of a job, preparing them for college and future careers.
“Jobs look really good on college applications,” Barnes said. “You learn how to be on time, how to communicate with people [and] how to handle co-workers or customers. Colleges really like to see the accountability and maturity students get from a job.”
