As their first project of the new school year, the Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club plans on redoing the bulletin board outside B155. During their meeting on Thurs, Oct. 10, the GSA met to plan and construct a poster to replace the displays currently installed, those being an advertisement for the LGBTQ+ Perspectives in Literature class and an advertisement for the GSA.
“The most recent posters were made two years ago,” said senior Astra Smith, GSA captain. “The information on the previous GSA poster is incorrect; we’ve changed a few things since its creation.”
Since Seth Leblanc, the previous GSA teacher sponsor, departed from McLean at the end of last year, the LGBTQ+ Perspectives in Literature class is no longer being promoted. The GSA took the entirely empty bulletin board as an opportunity to help grow their membership.
“As it is, we’ve got seven seniors and two sophomores in the club,” Smith said. “Being able to make our club known to students is important. We want to include as many students as we can in our organization.”
While this project might seem insignificant, it is anything but. The club has seen a steady decline in membership over the years.
“Having students know about the GSA’s existence is big,” Smith said. “We want people to know that there’s a space at school where they can feel comfortable just being themselves.”
