With a new leadership committee, UNICEF is looking to implement new interactive activities this year that will raise awareness of the different issues many children face in our world.
“We want to include this year mostly guest speakers and people that will educate the club members on different aspects of UNICEF,” said junior Maria Ayvazian, the UNICEF secretary. “We are currently looking for guest speakers that work or [have] worked for UNICEF that will tell us more about the organization.”
The club would also like to expand its connections across the country and internationally to broaden its partnership with the UNICEF organization more directly. Nevertheless, McLean UNICEF also plans on amplifying the usual smaller activities that club members have been accustomed to.
“Some of our previous activities were cleaning up trash around the school, writing cards for sick kids or reading books on video to send to children,” said junior Lucianna Nuzzo, UNICEF officer. “In general, UNICEF previously consisted of some smaller more local impacts, but we really would like to expand out.”
Recently, the club wrote cards for medical residents who are training in Florida. UNICEF is also looking forward to creating a supportive project to help as many people as possible in Florida during the hurricane season. In the near future, the club plans to attend the Holiday Bazaar to create delicious food, as they’ve done during the past years, to raise money for children passing through various hardships.
“UNICEF is such an amazing club and it really is a great way to make friends, to earn volunteer hours, to help [multiple] people and to be part of something greater than yourself,” Nuzzo said. “I would definitely encourage people to join clubs, volunteer and get out of their comfort zone.”
