With a variety of treats from festive paw-decorated cupcakes to cookies of all kinds, the Animal Amity Club’s bake sale on Saturday, Mar. 16 raised over $1,000 in donations for the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation in Falls Church.
“The bake sale went very well,” junior club co-president Reagan Cooley said. “A lot of people were very generous with their donations.”
After just an hour of the sale, the club had reached over $800 and many of their goods had sold out due to their popularity.
“We saw at least 150 customers come by within the first hour,” Cooley said.
Though the sale was a success in raising sufficient funds, the prices of each baked good was based entirely on donations – each item was worth however much a customer was willing to donate to the cause.
“The sale went very well,” junior club co-president Owen Thiebert said. “We hope that if we do another event similar to this one, we’ll get as good of an outcome as this bake sale, if not better.”
The spirit of the club was evident among the many members present at the sale table, with others raising awareness of the event with signs along the nearby street.
Members present at the event were able to earn service hours for volunteering at the bake sale stand which was located in front of the CVS Pharmacy in downtown McLean.
“All the members donated their own baked goods and each member contributed a lot to the effort,” Cooley said.
The members’ efforts came to fruition, with many of their goods selling out within the first hour of the event.
“I think that everyone seemed to like the pumpkin chocolate chip loaf,” junior club officer Landon Moore said. “It was nice to see that they were among the first baked goods to sell out and to know that we were helping a good cause.”
The club’s co-president Owen Theibert had promised to shave his head if the club raised $1,000 at the sale. At the end of the fundraising event, members counted their donations and shaved Thiebert’s head in celebration of the club’s success.
Though a lighthearted and fun way to end the event, Thiebert wanted to stress the importance of the event and hopes to continue his and the club’s efforts to raise money for local shelters in need throughout the community along with spreading awareness for the club’s cause as a whole.
“We encourage others to support their local animal shelters, it’s key to protecting local animals,” Thiebert said.
