Last week, Treyarch released a trailer for an unexpected upcoming mobile release of Call of Duty. The game had a quiet beta release on the Australian Google Play Store on Dec. 18th 2018.
Call of Duty Mobile is being developed by Tencent, the developers of the recently successful mobile port of Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), so Call of Duty mobile is expected to be optimized to run on most phones, unlike the port of Fortnite Battle Royale that only ran on specific Androids and iPhones.
The game features Call of Duty’s signature multiplayer and a zombies mode that is closer to a linear campaign compared to the usual arcade infinite wave survival mode.
The multiplayer features iconic maps from the Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, including “Nuketown” and “Crash;” it is the first free to play Call of Duty game and also includes with free updates.
This isn’t Call of Duty’s first time on mobile, as there have been mobile ports of the zombie mode from Black Ops 1 and World at War, Call of Duty Strike Team, a tactical game where you direct soldiers to different positions around a map, and Call of Duty Heroes, a strategy game similar to clash of clans; but Call of Duty Mobile is the first mobile Call of Duty to feature an online multiplayer mode similar to it’s PC and Console counterparts.
Call of Duty Mobile has also been teased to include something similar or identical to the Blackout mode from Black Ops 4, which may make many PUBG players flock to Call of Duty Mobile, like what happened to PUBG players on PC and Console. This also makes Apex Legends the only currently popular battle royale game to not feature a mobile port (Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, Fortnite, Blackout and Apex Legends, etc.).
The Zombies mode was briefly teased during the trailer, displaying the hell’s retriever from the Black Ops 2 Zombies map, “Mob of the Dead,” the doglike creature is on a map similar to the Black Ops 2 launch map, “Tranzit,” which was in the December Australian release of Call of Duty Mobile.
Treyarch and Tencent didn’t reveal a release date for Call of Duty: Mobile, but android players have the option to sign up for a beta version and play it early.
