McLean’s UNICEF club is upgrading their fundraiser events for March and April, hoping to raise more funds for children in need. Starting off last Wednesday, the club hosted a meeting after school to create cards for the National Nutrition Month.
“The purpose [of the card event] is to educate kids on healthy eating habits,” said junior Luzy Nuzzo, UNICEF club officer.
During the meeting, students were able to make colorful and meaningful cards for children in the hospital, who might be battling with different difficult situations, such as eating disorders. In addition, they are hoping to officially hold their bake sale.
“Our plans are to redo our bake sale and make it Saint Patrick’s themed, as the last one got cancelled because of snow,” Nuzzo said.
The club is also trying to contact guest speakers who will speak up against many of the struggles different underprivileged children are going through and how students can make a difference.
“It is important to contribute to UNICEF and its fundraising efforts because the outcome is so fantastic,” said junior Maria Ayvazian, UNICEF club secretary. “The children around the world need to be helped out and supported, [especially if] they don't have the means to do so. UNICEF does exactly that, which is why being a part of this organization is such an amazing way to get involved.”
To further create an impact on global issues, the club hopes to paint the rock for Earth Day and raise awareness on environmental issues, such as climate change. No matter the fundraiser or the purpose of the event, the club is optimistic.
“Supporting UNICEF is important as it allows the club to continue on,” Nuzzo said. “Through raising money, we are able to make more of an impact through bigger events.”
