“Focus” by Aqyila (Jan. 24) – R&B – 4/5 stars
After the release of her debut album, up and coming R&B artist Aqyila has released many singles, the newest among them being “Focus.” This easy-going track follows Aqyila as she asks her partner to give her more time and care in their relationship. The song preaches an anthem of never settling for less than what you truly want and putting yourself first, making a great addition to any personal hype playlist. Aqylia’s breathy vocals backed by whimsical instrumentals make this the perfect song to listen to while cruising in your car on a sunny day. For those who are ready for it to be spring already, I highly recommend this song to add to your daily music rotation.
“Blue Jean Baby” by Zach Bryan (Jan. 26) – Country – 3/5 stars
Matching with Zach Bryan’s previous records, “Blue Jean Baby” is rowdy, fun and probably made to be blasted through a loudspeaker. The whole track feels like a memory of the night before, as Bryan reminisces on someone laughing in coveralls, a bandana, and of course, blue jeans. The song seems to focus on goodbyes and endings, as Bryan mentions New Year’s Eve, quiet nights and heading home at “four in the mornin’.” What exactly Bryan is saying goodbye to is unclear, but this reflective tone accented by Bryan’s signature raspy vocals makes for a bold bar song, which is a heavily explored vibe in Bryan’s musical catalog. Although this song is pretty catchy, it seems a little too similar to many of Bryan’s other songs and almost feels incomplete. However, if another catchy nighttime Zach Bryan tune is what you’re looking for, then I would definitely recommend this track.
“Safe” by JP Saxe (Jan. 24) – Pop – 4/5 stars
I’ve long been a fan of JP Saxe and his vulnerable lyrics since his release of “If the World Was Ending” with Julia Michaels in 2019, and his new single “Safe” did not disappoint. The song begins in the middle of a dreamy soundscape as JP Saxe describes how he has never needed to be much of a fighter, but will always fight to keep his loved one safe. This sweet love letter of a song is easily relatable to all listeners and appeals to the universal wish to protect those we care about. JP Saxe’s introspective lyrics paired with his smooth vocals make for a relaxing mix of sounds. This mid-tempo track is an easy listen and would make the perfect addition to any February playlist, especially as Valentine’s Day approaches.
“Basic Being Basic” by Djo (Jan. 24) – Alternative – 3.5/5 stars
Following Djo’s viral single “End of Beginning” from 2022, a new album, “The Crux,” is set to release in April 2025. The first single of this album, “Basic Being Basic,” just released last Friday, Jan. 24, and seems to promise the same unique, introspective sound as was featured on Djo’s sophomore album. In this track, Djo, also known as Stranger Things actor Joe Keery, explores his desires to lead a “basic” life despite his major career successes. He continues to criticize those who are “scared of being basic” and claims that there is no problem with wanting to embrace the simple things in life. This laid-back tune is reminiscent of the 80’s synth sound, with an upbeat tempo that carries the listener throughout the song. Although this track was not really my cup of tea at first, it seems to grow on you with every listen, and I have no doubt that people will enjoy singing along to it on the radio.
