Theater McLean has been working to produce an on-stage production of Sense and Sensibility, one of Jane Austen’s famous novels that entertains the audience both romantically and comically.
The story follows a family of three sisters who are forced to navigate financial struggles and romantic affairs, all while supporting their widowed mother and grieving the loss of their late father.
“I play the character of John Willoughby, the love interest of one of the sisters,” junior Alex Valencic said. “He’s kind of the heroic charming prince and definitely has a lot of character development.”
The theater team has been working relentlessly to learn the script and manufacture costumes in time for opening night. Nonetheless, the relaxed rehearsal atmosphere helps contribute to the cast’s ability to work well and focus together.
“When we’re on stage [in rehearsal] it’s really fun and playful,” Valencic said. “Mr. Reid, the [director], always wants us to make ‘choices,’ which means going with your gut and doing whatever feels right in the moment, which helps the scene feel more real.”
Although there can be unexpected issues along the way, such as a script change or blocking issues, the cast is trained to adapt and perform just as a professional would. McLean’s theater department has taken on a plethora of classics, such as Mamma Mia, Much Ado About Nothing and now, Sense and Sensibility will shine on the McLean stage.
