With the theater premiere of Wicked just a month away, Starbucks has launched a new collection of beverages and merchandise to celebrate the cinematic event. Beginning October 22, fans across the US can try the refresher Glinda’s Pink Potion and coffee-based Elphaba’s Cold Brew as they anticipate the new film. Although the brand’s drinks are known to be a bit pricey, and the new flavors are unexceptional, the uniquely festive idea behind these beverages makes them worth a try for all Wicked lovers.
Glinda’s Pink Potion: 2.5/5 stars
As the drink inspired by the bubbly and fun Glinda the Good Witch, this drink looks like every pink-lover’s delight. This beverage consists of the Mango Dragonfruit Refresher shaken with coconut milk and topped with a dairy-free strawberry cold foam and a dusting of colorful sprinkles. The first couple sips of this drink seemed tasty, as the strawberry cold foam was undeniably fruity and flavorful. However, as I continued to sip on this refresher, I felt a little sick to my stomach. Usually the Starbucks refresher beverages are my go-to order, but this drink was just too overwhelmed with sweetness. The strawberry cold foam paired with the flavors of mango, sweet coconut milk and dragon fruit proved to be too many sugary flavors for one small drink. Ultimately, I would not purchase this drink again, especially at the price of almost six dollars for the smallest size available.
Elphaba’s Cold Brew: 3/5 stars
For the coffee lovers, Elphaba’s Cold Brew offers a bitter contrast to the sweet and fruity flavors of Glinda’s Pink Potion. A variation of Starbucks’ popular cold brew line, the classic coffee is sweetened with peppermint syrup and topped with matcha cold foam and green candy sprinkles. Although visually appealing, this beverage was too strange for my liking. The matcha cold foam paired well with the bitter cold brew, but the peppermint syrup wasn’t sugary enough to make up for those harsh flavors. Additionally, the minty undertones clashed unpleasantly with the coffee and matcha. The blend consisted of just too many contrasting flavors to be appetizing. As a result, I found myself taking tiny sips of the drink, and while I finished the cup, it was primarily for the caffeine boost.
