McLean National Honors Society Hosts Book and Board Game Drive
March 15, 2020
When someone thinks about a charitable drive to support the needs of the impoverished, the first thing that comes to mind is the collection of canned food and clothing. This, however, is far from the only thing that poor lack. Although providing the bare necessities is indeed important, those in need are also often unable to afford enrichment as well, leaving them with fewer educational or recreational options. In order to rectify this, the McLean National Honors Society has decided to host a book and board game drive to provide the students at Timber Lane Elementary School with fun and interesting activities.
The entire board of the National Honors Society, including president Melinie Chan, vice president Emily Chopra, secretary Julia Johansen, treasurer Angela Feng and historian Jerrick Bravo, have all been working diligently to organize this book and boardgame drive as a way to give back to the community. When asked about what inspired them to put together this event, Emily Chopra, Vice President of the Mclean National Honors Society said: βThe other officers and I were looking into a way to involve the entire honor society in a community service activity where we could really impact our local community as well as create a strong purpose to unite McLean behind.β
The McLean National Honors Society decided upon donating their received materials to Timber Lane Elementary after the school reached out to them directly, requesting materials to use in Class. Emily Chopra said that, β[I hope] these items can be lent for use in and out of school to provide some enriching entertainment for these young students.β
As of right now, the National Honors Society is unsure of how the recent quarantining of Fairfax County Schools in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 will affect the timing or donation process for their drive. Currently, they are awaiting official FCPS county reports to guide their decisions moving forward.
