For as long as McLean students can remember, the 10 minute break has been between the first period of the day and Highlander Time. When the schedule changed this year, break got moved to between the last two periods of the day, throwing a wrench in the schedules most students were comfortable with.
Due to backlash by students and parents, McLean High School’s administration has decided to move break back to its old place between first period and Highlander Time.
But what do McLean students think about this change? Are they embracing the comeback of the old schedule or have they actually grown accustomed to this new schedule?
When asked about it, sophomores, seniors, and juniors expressed excitement at the comeback of the new break time.
Senior Megan Leimkuhler highlighted one of the pros of the old break time, stating that, “It makes sense to have it before Highlander time because you can get passes.”
Many students need to visit
other teachers during Highlander Time, and having break right before that allowed students an opportunity to get passes so they could go to the classes they needed help in during Highlander Time.
Additionally, some students felt that this break time in between the final two periods in the day was actually ineffective.
“[I] didn’t even know there was a break anymore,” senior Danielle Maynard said.
However, freshmen expressed different feelings towards the new break proposal. Although they knew there was a break, they were upset when they found out it would be moving.
“[I like] how it is now because Highlander time is already like a break and it’s nice to have a break after lunch,” freshman Kristen Waagner said .
Once freshmen get a taste of the benefits upperclassmen argue are in the old break time, maybe they will enjoy that schedule as well.
