On May 29, girls varsity soccer ended their 17-game undefeated run this season with a 1-0 loss against defending state champions Battlefield High School in the regional quarterfinals. After dominating the game in the early stages, McLean’s momentum was interrupted by a 75-minute rain delay during the first half.
“I think it affected us because we were on a roll, and then we had to stop and they were able to adjust and then we didn’t adjust because we were [controlling the game],” girls varsity soccer coach Rob Bouchard said. “In the second half, they adjusted and took it to us better and I think if we played without a rain delay, I think it might have been a little different of a game.”
It was a whirlwind season for this year’s squad. With a final record of 15-1-2, the team plowed through nearly every opponent in their path. With a good mix of experienced and promising players, the team bonded well and that showed on the field.
“The team dynamic was amazing this year and we were all really close, in past years, we weren’t nearly as cohesive,” team captain Maddie Dalzell said. “So, this year it sort of all came together.”
Despite the disappointing end to their season, things are looking positive in the team’s future. With five talented rising seniors set to light up the competition next season, the team’s winning ways are sure to continue.
